Massage Therapy
Understanding Massage Therapy
Massage therapy involves much more than applying pressure to muscles. Different approaches use touch, pressure, movement and soft-tissue techniques for different purposes — from relaxation and recovery to addressing pain, mobility and physical function.
Understanding what a technique is intended to do, when it may be appropriate and where its limitations lie is essential for both therapists and people receiving treatment.
Purpose, Response & Individual Needs
There is no single massage technique that is appropriate for every person or every condition.
Treatment may vary according to symptoms, physical demands, health history, tissue sensitivity and individual goals. More pressure does not necessarily mean better treatment, and temporary soreness does not automatically indicate effectiveness.
Good massage therapy should therefore be based on purpose, appropriate technique, individual response and reassessment, rather than simply following a routine.
