Remedial Massage vs Relaxation Massage

You walk into a massage clinic and see two choices:

Remedial Massage

Relaxation Massage

The simplest answer is the purpose.

Relaxation Massage: Sometimes You Just Need to Switch Off

Not every massage needs to fix something.

Sometimes you’ve had a long week, your whole body feels tired, and you don’t want anyone asking you to rotate your shoulder or rate your pain out of ten.

You just want to lie down.

Fair enough.

Relaxation massage generally focuses on comfort, calming the body and reducing general muscle tension. The treatment is usually flowing, comfortable and less focused on investigating one particular problem.

And yes — relaxation is a perfectly good reason to have a massage.

They both involve massage. They may even use some of the same techniques.
So… what’s actually different?

Remedial Massage: When There Is Something to Investigate

Remedial massage has a different purpose.

Perhaps your neck keeps becoming stiff.

Maybe one shoulder doesn’t move like the other.

Or you keep saying:

“It’s always this spot.”

That’s when we need to become a little more curious.

Rather than simply massaging where it hurts, remedial treatment may involve discussing your symptoms, looking at movement, identifying relevant areas to treat and checking whether anything changes afterwards.

The massage itself is only part of the process.

And here’s something important:

“More pressure isn’t automatically better treatment.”

More pressure isn’t automatically better treatment.
Sometimes the useful question isn’t:
“How hard can we press?”
It’s:
“Why are we pressing there in the first place?”

If your goal is to relax, unwind and enjoy the treatment, relaxation massage may be exactly what you need.

If you have a specific problem affecting pain, movement or everyday activities, remedial massage may be more appropriate.

Neither one is automatically better.

They’re simply trying to achieve different things.

And if you’re not sure which one to book?

Ask.

That’s a much better option than spending 60 minutes wondering whether you chose the wrong massage.
